Chapter 11

ENCHANTMENT

Despite Augere’s disappointment in Grey’s apparent lack of knowledge—or was this still merely a reluctance on his part to share all that he knew?—their relationship flourished. He had to consider the sad possibility that Grey truly knew nothing new about their shared circumstance. And if he knew only what Augere himself knew, how could Grey be blamed for that?

Augere had avoided overseas travel since his transformation. His dismal and ill-fated voyage to New Orleans from Bordeaux in 1800, still quite vivid in his memory, had brought him only misery. The crossing itself had taken weeks and had been grueling, uncomfortable, and not without its dangers. As Vampire, Augere thought the same trip might prove to be completely impossible. And when he might have finally considered making the journey, political unrest made the possibility of the trip even more unlikely.

After nearly a year together, Grey suggested they should take a trip abroad. The clever and seemingly more experienced Grey convinced Augere they could easily manage sea travel, having made such a trip many times by himself. Sea travel and the accommodations had markedly improved since Augere’s initial crossing, and the ocean voyage took less time now. Grey explained how it could be done.

They made plans to travel to Europe. They brought live animals to be shipped as cargo with them, ostensibly to transport them to land owned in England. This was the excuse they gave to be able to accomplish the journey as Vampires. As the days at sea passed, the animals, sadly, would be lost to unknown illness or injury, having been discreetly drained of blood and the carcass thrown overboard. If an injury was feigned, the animal would be offered up to be cooked and shared so as not to go to waste. Passengers rarely minded access to fresh meat. Anticipating that explanations of illness could arouse fear and suspicion of a plague among the passengers, the two Vampires, appearing to be exceedingly healthy, albeit quite pale, would be able to allay the fears of others. Such a journey might still hold risk but could certainly be done.

Augere made discreet arrangements with the Geniers prior to taking what he told them would be an extended journey. He maintained his privacy about his business affairs, not trusting to share the truth with the Geniers, much less Grey. He already found reason to be suspicious of some of Grey’s stories, which caused him to place greater trust in the Geniers, a fact which amused him, given the early history of mistrust between them. In time, he thought he would come to have the same confidence in Grey that he now held with the Geniers; after all, he and Grey were the same creature and shared the same circumstances. But for now, he decided it was prudent to remain cautious until he had a better acquaintance with his new companion.

The journey worked out much as Grey had assured him it would. Once in England, the two traveled freely. They spent time in London, enjoying the city as any two well-off gentlemen of leisure would have done.
